That time my uncle swore by putting salt in his gas tank to fix engine knocks
He said it would clean the valves better than any additive, I tried it on my 2003 Civic last summer and the knock got worse for 2 days before it went away. Has anyone else had an old timer give them car advice that actually worked or backfired like this?

Yeah you try that stuff? My dad swore putting a raw egg in the radiator would fix a leak. Had to flush the whole system after, what a mess.

The whole salt-in-the-gas-tank thing is just part of that bigger pattern where people think a little bit of harsh stuff will magically fix complicated machines. It's like how some folks swear by pouring coke on a corroded battery terminal or using a penny as a fuse - sometimes it works by accident but half the time it just makes a bigger mess to clean up.

@davidkim you beat me to the egg story, that one's a classic with the old timers. Salt in the gas tank though, that's a new one on me. Honestly, if your engine knock got worse for two days before it fixed itself, how do you know it wasn't just the knock fixing itself on accident? Might've been some carbon buildup that got knocked loose and then it cleared out. Or maybe the salt just corroded something enough to make the knock sound different. Seems like a lot of risk for maybe fixing a knock that might not have been that serious to begin with.
