That law in my town about not hosing down your driveway after 6pm still exists for a reason

I keep hearing people online say it's just a stupid old rule from the 1970s, but our water restrictions got really bad back in 2022 and the town actually enforced it with a $75 fine. Has anyone else had a local weird law that actually made sense during a drought or something?

You mentioned "stupid old rule from the 1970s" but I think you might be mixing up the timeframe. That driveway hosing ban actually came from the late 80s in a lot of towns, not the 70s. I know because my uncle was on the water board back then and they put it in after the 1987-1988 drought dried up the reservoirs. We had a similar rule in my town about not washing cars on even numbered days during summer, and it felt dumb until 2022 when they actually started checking plates and handing out tickets. Those old rules seem random until the water drops low enough that people get desperate.

We had that even/odd plate rule here too. My neighbor got a ticket for washing his mustang on a Tuesday in July.

That's just how it goes with these water restrictions, they sit around gathering dust until a drought hits and suddenly everyone's a criminal for washing their car. It's funny how rules we barely think about become a huge deal the second resources start running low.
