That time I spent 3 hours organizing my garage shelves and still can't find anything
Last year I decided to finally tackle my garage mess. Bought those heavy duty plastic bins from Home Depot for like $60 total, sorted everything by category, and labeled each bin with a sharpie. Sounds great right? Well I forgot to write what was actually inside, just stuff like "camping gear" and "tools." Now every time I need something I have to open 4 or 5 bins before I find it. Has anyone else made a labeling system that sounded good but totally failed in practice?

You know, I used to think I had the perfect system too... wrote "hardware" on a bin once and spent an hour digging through rusty screws and bent nails looking for one specific washer. It changed my mind about how I label stuff. Now I take a photo of the bin's contents with my phone and tape a printout to the side. Still not perfect but beats the guessing game.

The photo idea is a good step, but the printout taped to the side will just yellow and peel off after a few months in a garage or workshop. What I started doing is using a cheap label maker with clear tape - the kind that sticks better and doesn't fade. Write the exact sizes and types on the label, like "3/8" galvanized washers" instead of just "hardware." Saves a lot of head scratching later.
