TIL the original RoboCop had way more subtle humor than the reboot

Was watching the 2014 RoboCop remake last night with a buddy who's a huge fan of the original. He pointed out how the old one used news commercials and fake ads to show a messed up future. I never caught that as a kid. The remake just did action scenes without any of that smart satire. Made me appreciate the 1987 version a lot more. Anyone else notice little details like that in remakes?

Watching the old one again as an adult was a trip because the fake commercials and news reports are genuinely funny but also dark as hell. The remake felt like it was embarrassed to be a RoboCop movie, just trying to be a serious action flick instead of leaning into that weirdness. My buddy and I ended up rewatching the original right after and it just clicked how much smarter it was with its jokes.

Oh man, that buddy of yours is totally right. I watched the original again last month and those fake commercials just hit different now that I'm older. The reboot really did miss that whole layer of cleverness, it's like they forgot what made the first one so good.

Did they even watch the original before making that thing?
