Trying to decide between cloud and local after my lights went dumb
Got new smart bulbs for the living room. Chose a brand that uses cloud control. Everything was fine for a week. Then my internet had a brief outage. Lights stopped responding. Had to use the physical switch like old times. Cloud is convenient for remote access. But it fails when the web drops. Local setups with a hub work offline. They need more gear upfront. Which way do you lean? Is the cloud worth the risk?

Been there, local hubs never let you down.

Go full local and ditch the cloud entirely.

Switched to a local setup after one too cloud sync failure. Saved a bunch on subscription fees and my data actually feels mine now. Honestly, the best tech decision I made this year.

Actually cloud setups get a bad rap sometimes for that exact reason. Sure the lights go dumb during an outage, but how often does that really happen? Most internet hiccups are sorted in minutes. The pure ease of setting up a cloud bulb and checking it from anywhere, no extra hardware needed, is a huge win for renters or people who just want it simple. Having to flick the old switch once in a blue moon is a fair trade for that everyday convenience.
