That viral video of a factory making eggs out of plastic powder turned out to be a parody from 2014.

I saw it on Facebook last week from my aunt's share and almost believed it until I noticed the YouTube channel name was 'Silly Kitchen Pranks' in the corner, has anyone else fallen for old parody videos getting passed around as real news?

Used to roll my eyes at people who fell for obvious fakes, but that egg video got me too for a solid minute. The production quality on those old parodies is way higher than you'd expect, plus the lighting and packaging look just like real factory footage. It's honestly embarrassing how easily these things get recycled every couple years with a new caption. Makes me wonder how many other "exposés" I've shared without checking the date.

I dug around a few years back, found it was a 2016 parody by a crew that does prop commercials, but the post I saw had it labeled as 2023 footage.

My buddy Matt actually fell for this same thing last year. He works in a food science lab and was all ready to write a whole blog post about how plastic is ending up in our eggs. He spent like three hours fact-checking the video, checking the lighting and the texture of the powder, even went frame by frame to find the watermark he missed. The whole time he's texting me screenshots of the packaging thinking he's about to expose a huge scandal. Turns out the watermark was literally a tiny YouTube logo in the corner that said "Parody" from 2012. He still gets embarrassed when I bring it up at barbecues.
