My local library's book club just banned me for pointing out 'The Da Vinci Code' is just a rewrite of 'Holy Blood Holy Grail'
I was at the Oak Park library last Tuesday and the moderator literally said 'we don't do conspiracy theories here' when I showed the copyright dates. Has anyone else been shut down for calling out obvious ripoffs at book clubs?

That "we don't do conspiracy theories here" line is classic. It's the same move people pull when you point out obvious stuff they don't want to hear. I've seen it happen with book clubs and even at work when you show someone borrowed a whole process from another company without giving credit. People hate having their comfort bubble popped, especially in groups where everyone's supposed to just nod and agree. Calling out a bad copy is fair game, not a conspiracy.

Yeah @the_christopher nailed it, next time just bring snacks and lead the discussion sideways instead of firing off facts.

Right, that's exactly how it goes. It's like people forget being a group means you can still have real discussions, not just echo chamber stuff. I had this thing at my old book club where I pointed out the author basically took a plot from a lesser known novel, and they all got so defensive. Someone literally said "we don't do negativity here" and I was just like, wait, pointing out a clear copy is negativity now? It's wild how fast a simple observation gets labeled as drama just because it makes people uncomfortable. Snacks and a sideways convo is definitely the better move, keeps the peace while still getting your point across without everyone's hackles up.
