On my last street eats tour, the guide shared neighborhood stories. Now I always look for that.

Your mileage may vary is right. I once went to a vegan potluck because a friend said the spread was amazing. I showed up with my famous seven layer dip, only to realize everything was made of lentils and nutritional yeast. My dip was the only thing with actual cheese, and I felt like a war criminal. I still check menus now, but my reputation in that friend group never recovered.

I just go for the food.

Going for the food is totally the move. I've been to so many events where the main draw was the spread. Like, my friend's gallery opening had this amazing taco bar, and I still talk about it. In my experience, if the food is good, everything else is just a bonus. Your mileage may vary, but I always check what's on the menu before I commit to going somewhere.

How do you handle it when you bring the wrong dish to an event? I really felt for @zarak46 because I once brought a platter of deviled eggs to a baby shower, not realizing the mom-to-be had a strong aversion to them. It was so awkward, but now I double-check preferences along with the menu. Even with all that care, sometimes you still end up with a mismatched meal.
