Found out yesterday that laser removal can actually make cover-ups easier

I was at a consultation with an artist in Portland who told me that zapping the old ink a few times first can lighten it enough to use way more color options. He showed me a photo of a sleeve where they did three laser sessions on a dense black tribal piece before covering it with a koi fish. Has anyone else tried this method or is it just another upsell from the shop?

Think about the scar tissue too. Lasering old ink breaks it down but it also messes with the skin texture underneath. I had a buddy who did this for a coverup and the artist ended up fighting with how the new ink went into those areas. Some spots took the color uneven and others looked puffy. It might be worth asking the artist how they handle that or if they've worked with lasered skin before. Have you talked to anyone who actually went through the full process yet?

Yeah my cousin did the laser route for a really dark tribal armband and the coverup ended up looking kinda blotchy in spots. The artist said it was like trying to tattoo over a bad sunburn that never quite healed right.

Don't you mean laser breaks up the ink under the skin, not in it?
