My car key fob stopped working in a Target parking lot last Sunday, had to call my wife from a payphone of all things
I was loading groceries in the rain near the Garden State Plaza Target and the key fob just gave up. Clicked it like 20 times, nothing. So I walk to the customer service desk and ask if they have a phone book. Kid looks at me like I'm from another planet. Ended up using a payphone by the pharmacy section to call my wife to bring the spare. Has anyone else run into a key fob dying at the worst possible time?

Read somewhere that key fob batteries last about 3-4 years on average, but nobody ever warns you when they’re about to die. Had a buddy whose fob died in the middle of a parking garage in Hoboken, took him an hour to get someone to help jump the car because the fob wouldn't unlock the door either. Target should really keep some spare batteries at the service desk, feels like a missed opportunity.

Bought a 4-pack of those CR2032 batteries off Amazon for like three bucks with prime shipping, popped one in my fob and threw the rest in the center console (you know, just in case). Real game changer was when I actually programmed a spare key to my car myself using a youtube video, cost me nothing but ten minutes and a paperclip. Now I keep that spare hidden in a magnetic box under the bumper (shh dont tell anyone) so if my main fob dies I can still get in and start the car. Honestly if more people did this we'd save a lot of headaches in parking lots everywhere.

The payphone trick is a smart move honestly, I never even thought of that. One time mine died at a Wawa gas station and I just popped the battery out with a quarter from the ashtray and rubbed it on my shirt to get a better connection. Got me to the nearest auto parts store where I bought a pack of lithium batteries for like five bucks. Stashed the extras in the glovebox and never looked back.
