I used to think deepfakes were just funny memes until I saw one of my own mom saying things she never said

My cousin showed me a video of our mom giving a speech at a wedding that never happened, and it was so perfect I almost believed it myself, and now I wonder how many of these are floating around targeting regular people like us.

Yeah I used to laugh at those Tom Cruise deepfakes and think they were harmless. Then my buddy sent me a clip of our old boss saying he was shutting down the company and I almost panicked before I realized it was fake. It's scary how easy it is to make someone look like they're confessing to something or saying something awful when they never did. Now I don't even want to watch videos of people I know unless I'm sure where they came from.

Nah but deepfakes are just jokes, people need to chill and stop taking everything so seriously.

My cousin's wedding last summer got completely ruined by one of those deepfake things. Someone took a video of the bride's drunk uncle giving a toast and made it look like he was trashing the groom's family in front of 200 people. The whole reception turned into this huge awkward silence and people were literally taking sides before my aunt finally screamed at everyone to stop. By the time they figured out it was fake, half the guests had already left and the bride was crying in the bathroom. I get that people think it's funny but once it hits someone you actually care about, the joke wears off real quick.
