I'll take an older dumb thermostat over any smart home system
My 1990s Honeywell thermostat never failed once in 25 years, but my neighbor's smart thermostat locked him out at 2 AM after a firmware update. I don't need an app to control my heat - I just want it to work without phoning home to some server.

Wait, am I the only guy who still has a rotary phone dialing his thermostat? My buddy did the whole smart home thing and his thermostat bricked during a snowstorm - I almost feel bad laughing, but it was February in Chicago. My old mercury switch one just clicks on and off like it's from the Flintstones era, and honestly I'm fine with that.

from the Flintstones era" is exactly how I describe my old school house stuff too. But seriously though, did your buddy's smart thermostat just stop responding because the app needed an update or did it actually physically break down from the cold? Because I keep hearing about this happening and nobody ever says which one it is, and that kind of matters if you're thinking about switching over.

@drew_hart4 my buddy's Nest just went dark and wouldn't turn back on until the power company fixed a line issue.
