My buddy in Austin swore by bartering for everything and it actually worked for 6 months
He traded guitar lessons for car repairs and house cleaning for a dentist visit, but then the dentist moved away and he had to pay cash anyway. Has anyone else tried a local barter system that actually lasted?

You're being too hard on the concept though. The key is building a trusted circle where everyone roughly values each other's time equally, not nickel-and-diming every skill. Plenty of communities manage it for years by sticking to informal agreements and keeping things simple without a weird time bank accountant. It works fine when people actually know and respect each other instead of trying to run it like a business.

My neighbor in Portland tried this with a local time bank, where you earn credits for mowing lawns or fixing bikes and spend them on things like massage or tax help. It worked okay for about a year until the guy running it got weird about tracking hours and people started haggling over how much a skill was worth. The real test is when something big breaks like a water heater, nobody wants to trade 40 hours of guitar lessons for that. Most of these systems fall apart because there's no neutral way to value an hour of plumbing versus an hour of piano practice. They work best for small, casual stuff but not for the serious costs that pop up in life.

You know, I used to think bartering was kind of a joke, but the way @dixon.james explained it changed my mind. When they said "the real test is when something big breaks like a water heater, nobody wants to trade 40 hours of guitar lessons for that," it hit me. I was one of those people who thought you could trade your way through everything if you just found the right community. But he's right, the small stuff works fine for a while, but life has these big expensive moments that just don't trade well. My buddy in Denver tried the same thing and it fell apart exactly like that when his car needed a new transmission and all he had was a stack of time credits. I still think bartering has its place for casual stuff like lawn care or babysitting, but it can't replace actual money for the serious things.
