That $200 rain barrel I installed paid itself off in 3 months

Honestly, I thought rainwater collection was just for hippies until I got my water bill last summer. I dropped $200 on a 55 gallon barrel and hooked it up to my downspout. After watering my garden for two months straight with free water, my bill dropped by almost $70 each month. Has anyone else found simple swaps like this that actually make a dent in your monthly costs?

My buddy did the same thing and his HOA sent him a nasty letter within a week.

(carter.joseph) might want to check their HOA docs for a rain barrel loophole, some places ban it only if it's visible from the street. Mine sits behind a bush and nobody's said a word, so sneaky placement can save the hassle. Even small changes like swapping out old shower heads cut my water use way more than I expected.
