That conversation with a retired AT&T lineman changed how I see cell towers

I was at a diner in Des Moines back in March and this older guy sitting next to me starts talking about how 5G towers are just 'repeater stations for something they don't want us knowing about.' He wouldn't say more but he tapped his coffee cup and gave me this look. Has anyone else run into old telecom workers who hint at stuff like this?

Did he mean the old microwave relay towers or the newer ones with the fake tree look...? Those older guys usually know a thing or two from back when they actually built the backbone of the system. Makes you wonder what kind of extra gear they were hooking up that wasn't in the official paperwork.

My uncle swore the pine tree tower near Ely had a whole second floor they never put on any blueprint.
