Picked a patch kit over a new tube on a hot ride in Phoenix, worked out okay

I flatted on the canal path last Saturday, about 8 miles from my car. Had both a patch kit and a spare tube in my bag, but I decided to patch the hole instead of swapping the tube. The rubber cement was almost dried out so it took me 15 minutes to get a good seal. Anyone else prefer patching on a long ride or do you just swap and go?

Patched a tire once near Tempe and the glue failed after two miles, so tubes win for me.

Glue jobs are all about prep and cure time, not the patch brand.

Miles, did the glue actually fail or did you not let it cure long enough? I've patched tires in Flagstaff and that cheap vulcanizing glue works fine if you wait the full 10-15 minutes before reassembling. Prep the rubber right, rough it up good, and let it set. A lot of people rush the cure time or don't clean the area well, then blame the patch.
