Spent $50 on a fancy phone mount for my car, but a shoelace works way better

I was so sick of my phone sliding off the dash while I'm driving, so I dropped 50 bucks on this heavy duty mount from Amazon. Thing lasted two days before the suction cup gave out in the Florida heat. Ended up tying a shoelace around my air vent and it holds my phone perfectly still. Anyone else find cheap fixes that beat the expensive gear?

Same pattern happens with camping gear half the time. Plastic breaks but a good old piece of paracord or a rock never lets you down.

A flat one for hammering tent stakes or a round one for holding down the tarp? I've got a few good rocks in my backyard I could probably test out next trip. Honestly though, it's wild how we're all paying $80 for a plastic tent stake set when a simple rock from the creek does the same job for free.

That "plastic breaks" part hit home. Last year I had a cheap plastic tent stake snap in half on the first hit against rocky ground. Just sat there holding the broken piece like an idiot. Ended up using a stick for the rest of the trip and it worked better than anything I bought. Paracord though, I carry way too much of it. I wrap my whole tent bag with it now like some kind of survivalist. It's got like a million uses, I even used it to fix my backpack strap once. Have you ever tried braiding paracord into a little bracelet or keychain for emergency use?
