Went to a laundromat in Austin and saw someone using a shower cap on their sneakers

I was washing my bedding at this place off Lamar last Saturday and this guy puts a clear shower cap over his dirty shoes before tossing them in the washer. He said it keeps the laces from tangling and the drum from getting scratched up by the eyelets. I tried it on my own pair last night and honestly it worked way better than I expected. Has anyone else found a random household item that saves your laundry gear?

My friend Lucy tried this with a pair of old tennis shoes she was about to toss out. She put them in a mesh laundry bag instead of a shower cap and it totally backfired. The bag got all twisted up around the laces and one shoe came out with the bag still stuck on it. Had to cut the bag off with scissors because the knots were so tight. She was so mad about the whole thing that she just threw the shoes away anyway. At least the shower cap trick sounds like it prevents that kind of mess.

Oh man, that's rough. I can totally see how that would happen with a mesh bag, they're just too flimsy for something with laces and eyelets. Poor Lucy, that sounds like a real headache. Sometimes you try to save a few bucks or repurpose something and it just makes everything worse. I've had similar DIY laundry mishaps where I thought I was being clever and it backfired. At least now she knows the shower cap method is the safer bet, even if it costs a dollar or two. Hope she finds a replacement pair she likes just as much.

Wait, mesh bags usually work fine for sneakers if you actually tie the drawstring tight and don't overload it.
