Boss drama is wrecking my deadlift groove
My boss keeps piling on last-minute tasks, and I can't shake off the frustration. When I deadlift, I end up jerking the bar and my back feels off. How do you separate job stress from your gym time to keep form clean?

Ever try deadlifting your boss instead?

Deadlifting your boss sounds crazy but I actually did something LIKE that once. My old manager was a TOTAL weight to deal with, always piling on extra work. I started setting clear limits and saying no when I was overloaded, and it WORKED wonders. He actually backed off once he saw I wouldn't just take everything. Sometimes you gotta lift the weight by standing your ground, you know?

In my office gym last year, I actually saw someone joke about deadlifting a dummy labeled with the boss's name. It was a weird way to blow off steam, but it got me thinking about the real weight we carry at work. @lucasscott hit the nail on the head with setting limits, which is like mental deadlifting, you know? Sometimes you gotta face the heavy stuff directly, just like picking up a barbell (if you avoid it, the weight just sits there crushing you). I've found that speaking up early, before things pile up, makes the lift way easier. It's not about real lifting, but that same idea of tackling what's in front of you, even if it's your boss's demands.

Yeah but here's the thing, that whole deadlift metaphor just doesn't sit right with me. Real work stress isn't a clean barbell you can just grab and lift, it's more like a messed up tangle of ropes that keeps moving. Setting limits sounds good in theory, but sometimes the "weight" is your rent or your kid's needs, so you just have to carry it. The gym logic is too simple for the messy stuff we actually deal with.
