Don't fall for that 'restore your headlights with bug spray' TikTok hack

I saw this video where this guy sprays bug spray on his yellowed headlights and wipes them clean like magic (looked so easy). So I bought a $7 can of Deep Woods OFF and spent like 20 minutes scrubbing my 2012 Civic's headlights in the parking lot. It worked for about 3 days, then the haze came back worse than before and now there's this weird sticky residue that actually attracts more dirt and bugs. Plus the spray ate through a spot on my bumper paint because I wasn't careful enough. So I wasted $7 on the bug spray and now I'm looking at spending $40 on a real restoration kit or $200 to replace the whole housings. Has anyone else gotten tricked by a car cleaning life hack that backfired this badly?

That bit about "hacks are made for attention not for actual long term results" is exactly right. I fell for the same bug spray trick on my old Altima and learned the hard way that those chemicals are way too harsh for plastic. What really got me was the sticky residue you mentioned, mine turned into this nasty film that actually made the headlights more yellow than they were before. Best advice I can give is to just bite the bullet and get a proper 3M restoration kit with the drill attachment, it's boring but it actually works and lasts a good year or two if you put some UV clear coat on after. Your mileage may vary, but I wasted over a hundred bucks trying shortcuts before I figured out the normal way is cheaper in the long run.

Three years back I had a buddy swear by that toothpaste trick for headlights and I ended up spending an afternoon buffing with Colgate while my neighbor who just wet sanded and sprayed clear coat was done in half the time with way better results. @kaigibson your onion story hits home because it's the same pattern of people thinking natural or household stuff is a magic bullet when it's really just a messy experiment at best. I still see folks on here pushing baking soda and vinegar for everything but if those hacks actually worked long term big companies would be out of business by now.

Learned the same lesson with a different hack honestly. Saw that "clean your grill with half an onion" thing and tried it on my gas grill. Smelled like burnt onion for a month and the grates got all rusty because onion juice is acidic and I didnt rinse it off properly. Its like people forget that hacks are made for attention not for actual long term results. The real trick is just using the right product for the job even if its boring. Bug spray is basically chemicals designed to kill insects not restore plastic. Makes sense it would mess stuff up.
