My buddy swore you could clean a chainsaw chain with just brake cleaner and a rag
Took me close to 3 hours to get all the pitch and sawdust out of a single 20 inch bar. He was dead serious, said he'd been doing it for years. Ended up buying a proper chain cleaning tool for $15 and finished the job in 20 minutes flat. Has anyone else had somebody try to sell you on a cleaning shortcut that just made more work?

The diesel method works but honestly for a chainsaw chain does it even need to be that clean.

Oh man, I feel your pain on this one. I tried the whole brake cleaner and rag thing once and it was a total nightmare, took me forever and I still had gunk caked in between the teeth. What actually worked for me was just soaking the chain in a bucket of diesel fuel overnight, then hitting it with a stiff brush the next morning. It loosened everything up way better than any spray could, and I was done in like 15 minutes. The diesel smell is kinda strong, but it beats scrubbing for hours and ending up with a half clean chain. I mean, sometimes the old school methods are just the most practical for this kind of job.
