Appreciation post: That random comment about my sub pacing that actually fixed my watch experience

Some guy in a thread said I was letting the audio breathe too much between action beats and cutting the subs too early, and after I tried matching the subtitle timing tighter to the actual dialogue windows it made every fight scene hit way harder, anyone else have a random stranger fix a tiny habit you didn't even know was broken?

Man, I gotta push back on that. I tried the tight sub sync thing for a few weeks and it actually made some scenes feel rushed to me. For example in John Wick 4 the staircase fight, I had my subs snapping to every single grunt and gunshot and it killed the rhythm of the long takes. I missed that half second of silence where the audio hangs before the next beat, that breathing room is part of the choreography for me. Plus some foreign language stuff, like in Shoplifters, the pauses between lines carry so much weight that chopping them off just to match the exact dialogue window flattens the emotional texture.

Yeah @park.miles you nailed it, that half second of silence is part of the edit, not a mistake. I noticed the same thing with slower paced movies like Drive, where the dead air between lines makes the whole scene feel tense. Tight syncing everything just kills that mood.

Totally agree. Tightening every pause just kills the pacing and sucks the tension out.
