Dub vs sub debate cost me my anime watch party group last night
I always tell people I watch subbed because that's how the creators intended it. But my buddy invited me over for a One Piece marathon with like 8 people and I had to decide between bringing my subbed files or just going with whatever they watched. Picked the subs because I figured everyone would respect the "original audio" thing. Turns out half the group had only ever seen the dub and couldn't keep up with the subtitles. They ended up splitting into two rooms and the vibe was totally ruined. Has anyone else gotten stuck in this kind of drama over dub vs sub?

Gotta disagree with you here. You walked into someone else's group and expected them to all adapt to your preference. That's not really fair to them, especially when they already had a plan going. If you knew half the group only watched dubbed, you should have just gone with the flow for one night. Being the one guy who insists on subs can kill the mood way more than the dub vs sub debate itself. Its not about which one is better, its about being a good hang and not making everyone else adjust to you. Maybe next time just ask what everyone wants instead of assuming.

Man @ryanm60 is totally right, I basically showed up to a potluck with my own fancy dish and was surprised everyone just wanted pizza. Maybe next time I'll just bring the snacks and keep my mouth shut about audio preferences.
Guess I learned the hard way that being the sub purist in a group of dub fans makes you look like the guy who insists on playing acoustic guitar at a party.
Kind of embarrassing when your hill to die on is reading speed instead of just enjoying the show with friends.

Honestly just ask upfront next time what everyone's watching before you even show up. Saves you from being that person who's gotta negotiate the audio settings for the whole group.
