Dub vs sub isn't even a debate when you hear the English voice actor for Goku versus the Japanese one
The Japanese Goku actually sounds like a grown man instead of an old lady with a cold, and after watching 50 episodes of Dragon Ball Z in Japanese I can't go back to the Funimation version without cringing.

I started with the Japanese dub on a fan site back in 2003 after downloading episode 78 in real player format. It took me maybe 20 episodes to completely forget about the Funimation voices because Masako Nozawa just brought this raw energy to every fight scene. Once you get used to Goku sounding like a determined warrior instead of a gruff action hero, the other version just feels wrong.

Missus, you nailed it with that RealPlayer download... I remember doing the same thing for the Frieza fight, waiting three hours for a 15 minute clip. @foster.jordan is right about the Buu saga too but for me it was the Gohan vs Cell fight that really broke through. I had a burned CD with that episode and I must have watched it fifty times because Nozawa's scream when Gohan loses it was just something else. The Funimation version always made Goku sound like he was trying to be tough while the sub just made him feel like a real person who happened to be able to shoot lasers from his hands. Once you hear that raw desperation in his voice it's like a switch flips in your brain and you can't go back.

Tbh the real trick is watching like five episodes of the subbed Buu saga back to back. By the time you hear Goku go Super Saiyan 3 for the first time in Japanese you won't even remember what the Funimation version sounded like. If you can find the scenes where Gohan fights Cell in the original Japanese it'll seal the deal pretty quick.
