Hit 500 anime completed on MyAnimeList and it felt weird

I hit 500 completed shows on MyAnimeList last Tuesday and it honestly caught me off guard. I didn't even realize I was that close until I checked my stats for the first time in months. That number felt huge to me because I remember when I hit 100 and thought that was a lot. But 500 means I've spent a crazy amount of time watching stuff, probably way more than I should admit. It made me start thinking about how my taste changed over the years, like I used to hate slice of life and now it's half my list. I also noticed I have around 80 dropped shows, which is a whole other story. Has anyone else hit a milestone on their anime tracker that made them stop and think? What number was it for you and did it change how you pick what to watch next?

Aw man, I had a buddy who accidentally hit 1000 once. He was bragging about his "meticulous tracking" (his words, not mine) and realized he'd been logging episodes twice for like six months, so half his count was fake. It was hilarious watching him freak out trying to fix it, but honestly, he still watches everything he can get his hands on, so I guess he's just built different for this hobby.

Remembered a guy from an old anime club who claimed he'd seen 500 shows but when we pressed him, half were just different seasons of the same franchise he'd rewatched a dozen times. That's the thing @ward.jamie, everyone bends the numbers their own way.

Ha, that's wild! But you know @irisowens, something nobody points out is that even with double counting, he clearly found enough shows to actually log that many entries in the first place. Like, he still watched a ton of stuff, just not as much as he thought. It's the same as when people count rewatches toward their total - where's the line between "I've seen 1000 shows" and "I've watched 1000 episodes of anime total"? Someone with a thousand episodes of One Piece alone would technically have a huge number but not the same variety. Your buddy's freakout was probably half about the numbers and half about realizing he had to rethink what "completion" even means in this hobby.
