I tried discussing a new show on a big subreddit versus a small dedicated forum, and the forum was way better.

Ever notice how big subs get flooded with the same jokes and hot takes? I found a smaller forum for a niche hobby and the difference is HUGE. People there actually read your posts and give real answers. The conversation goes deeper because everyone actually cares about the topic. It just feels like a real community instead of shouting into a void.

But what happens when your small forum gets popular, @the_rowan? I saw my favorite one get ruined because a big youtuber mentioned it. Suddenly it was all the same basic questions from new people who didn't search first. The old regulars just left because the real talk was gone.

The forum for vintage radio repair I joined last year has over 10,000 members now and it's still great. New people asking basic questions is just how communities grow, you have to teach them the culture. If the old regulars leave because it changes a little, maybe they cared more about having a private club than the hobby itself. A living forum needs some new blood to stay interesting.
