I watched the new 'Monster' anime with my friend who hates slow burns

We watched the first three episodes last weekend, and he was ready to drop it because he said nothing big happened. I told him to give it until episode five, which we did last night. The shift from just a hospital mystery to the full cat-and-mouse chase with Johan was huge. He went from checking his phone to being totally locked in by the end of the fifth episode. It made me realize how some shows really need that specific time to build up. Has anyone else had a friend completely change their mind on a series after a certain point?

Patience pays off with the good stuff. Monster is a classic example of a show that builds a foundation before it knocks the house down. Your friend's reaction is totally normal. Some stories just need that extra time to get the pieces in place before the real game starts.

Yeah, that "give it until episode five" thing is key. I had the same with my sister and Steins Gate. She thought it was just weird guys in a lab for the first half, but I told her to push through to the phone microwave turning into a time machine. She was hooked after that twist.

That Steins Gate example from king.val is spot on. It makes me wonder what other shows have that one specific episode where everything clicks. I wish more people gave stories that kind of runway.
