I had a similar thing happen with the old "Fullmetal Alchemist" dub years ago. The English voice for Edward just felt off to me, way too shouty in all the wrong moments. It's funny how @pat781's friend Mark had that exact same "restart the series" moment, because that's what I did too after one episode. Switching to the sub gave the brotherly scenes a totally different, quieter feel that worked better for me. It's wild how much a voice performance can reshape the entire story. I usually give dubs a fair shot, but sometimes the original acting just nails a vibe the translation can't catch.

Yeah, that "bored guy reading a grocery list" thing is so real. I had the same exact switch-up with a different show and it felt like watching a whole new character.

My buddy Mark watched the first two episodes dubbed and said Vash sounded like a bored guy reading a grocery list. He switched to the sub on a whim and was blown away by how much more energy and goofy charm the Japanese voice had in the silly scenes. It completely changed how he saw the character's personality. He ended up restarting the whole series.
