Question about the debate on dubbing versus subtitles I saw at Anime Expo last weekend

I was at Anime Expo in LA and heard two guys arguing for like 20 minutes about whether the new season of a certain show was better dubbed or subbed, and one guy said the English VA captured the emotion better while the other said the original Japanese voice actors had way more range - which side do you think is actually right for preserving the creator's intent, or does it even matter?

The creator's intent is a slippery thing because most Japanese directors work with the assumption you're watching it in Japanese. But here's the thing - if you're watching a show about samurai or traditional Japanese culture, the original language probably matters more for capturing those nuances. But for something like a sci-fi battle anime or a comedy, good English voice acting can actually improve the experience by making jokes land better for a Western audience. So are you really saying the creator's intent is more important than whether you actually enjoy watching the show? If the English voice cast nails the emotional beats, does it even matter if it's not exactly what the original director had in mind?

Wait, hold up @keith_bennett - are you seriously saying dubbed anime can actually be better than the original? Ngl, I've always thought losing the original voices kills the whole vibe no matter what type of show it is. Tbh, even in a sci-fi battle scene, that raw Japanese screaming hits different than some American voice actor trying too hard.
