Rant: I just found out how much money the One Piece anime makes

I was reading an article on Anime News Network yesterday and it said the One Piece anime has made over 20 billion yen from just TV rights and home video. That's like 130 million dollars. I knew it was popular but that number is just crazy to me. Does anyone else get surprised by the actual business numbers behind big shows?

Yeah, and that's just one piece of the money. You have to remember the merch sales are probably ten times that number. These long running shows are basically printing presses for the studios. It's wild to see the real scale of it laid out like that.

Man, you're so right about the merch, @keith_bennett. I saw a breakdown for a show like Spongebob once. The ticket sales for a tour are one thing, but the real cash is in all the t-shirts, lunch boxes, and video games. They sell that stuff everywhere for years. It's crazy how a hit kids show can basically fund a whole network just from toys alone.
