Shoutout to the debate about dubbing vs subtitles in Cowboy Bebop

My buddy and I spent 3 hours last Tuesday arguing over whether the English dub of Cowboy Bebop actually captures the vibe better than the original Japanese audio, and he swore the voice acting is just as good because Steve Blum killed it as Spike. I think the subs preserve the original director's intent, especially with the jazz soundtrack hitting different beats in each language. Which side do you fall on, and does it change if you watched the show first in one version?

...exactly, I watched the dub first on Adult Swim too so Spike's voice is just cemented in my brain, but I ended up checking out the sub for "Ballad of Fallen Angels" and the Japanese voice actor brings a quieter sadness to it that I totally missed the first time around.

Take it from someone who watched the dubbed version first back when it aired on Adult Swim - the English cast really made those characters feel like old friends to me. Your buddy's right that Steve Blum's performance is iconic, but I've gone back and watched scenes in Japanese and noticed certain emotional beats land differently. Out of curiosity, did you ever try rewatching a key episode in both languages back to back, or did you just stick with your first version the whole time?

Question whether this level of analysis is really necessary for a cartoon from 1998. It's just Spike shooting people with a sword gun.
