Showerthought: The 'best girl' debates in anime feel like they've gotten way too serious lately
Last week, I saw a thread in a different forum where someone wrote a full 800 word essay on why their favorite character from a show was objectively the best. They cited specific episodes from three years ago and broke down every scene. It felt less like a fun chat and more like a court case. I miss when these talks were just about who you liked and why, not proving a point. When did we start treating anime opinions like they're facts that need defending?

But what if taking it seriously is part of the fun now? For a lot of fans, digging that deep into a show is how they connect with it. That 800 word essay wasn't just about proving a point, it was someone showing how much they care. When you break down every scene, you're celebrating the work the creators put in. Maybe these debates got more serious because the shows themselves give us more to talk about. Treating it like a court case is just a new way for people to share their passion.

Remember my friend who got super into that space show? She spent weeks making a huge chart about the alien trade routes, just for fun. It wasn't about being right, it was her way of building a whole new piece of that world in her head. She said putting that much work in made the show feel like a place she could actually visit. That's the kind of deep care you're talking about, and it's pretty cool.

Treating it like a court case" is the new fan convention.

I keep going back to that 800 word essay example because it really shows what's changed. People aren't just yelling about who shot first anymore, they're building these whole cases with evidence and screenshots and episode timestamps. It's like the old fan club meetings turned into law school study sessions. The passion is clearly still there, but the format shifted from sharing feelings to presenting arguments. Honestly, I kind of miss when debates were more about what you loved than who could prove they loved it better.
