I finally listened to my dad about not topping trees after ignoring him for a decade.

He was a city arborist for 40 years and always said topping a stressed maple just pushes weak growth and invites decay. I did it anyway on a job in Toledo last fall, and now the client is calling about a huge limb failure. How do you explain this kind of long-term risk to a homeowner who just wants a tree 'shorter' right now?

Man, my buddy had a client who insisted on topping a big oak. It looked fine for a year, then a storm snapped one of those weak new limbs right through his sunroom roof. Cost a fortune.

My uncle was a roofer who always said you can't just slap new shingles over rotten wood. I saw a neighbor try that exact shortcut to save money, and two years later a whole section of their roof caved in during a heavy rain. They ended up paying triple for the full repair and interior water damage. Some jobs just can't be rushed.

Seen the same thing with cheap car repairs, always costs more later.

Ever try a cheap fix that totally backfired like @sean854's neighbor?
