I keep seeing crews in my city topping trees and calling it pruning

It's not just ugly, it stresses the tree and invites disease. I saw a row of maples get butchered like that on Elm Street last month, and half have new fungus growth already. How do we get homeowners to understand the difference?

Read arborists say topping trees is basically murder for oaks.

My buddy paid a crew to "prune" his big oak last fall... they basically gave it a flat top haircut. The thing looked sick all spring, and now there's a huge crack running down the main trunk. It's a total shame.
