Oak wilt nearly wiped out a whole block in my neighborhood last year

I was walking a property near Austin and noticed 5 giant oaks dropping leaves in June, turned out the HOA ignored the wilt signs for months. By the time I got an arborist out there, 3 trees were already dead and the roots had spread to 2 more yards. How do you convince homeowners to treat proactively before it turns into a whole street disaster?

Even my houseplants would be toast if I owned an oak tree.

Plants? Man, oak trees are basically the ultimate ecosystem landlords. Every single critter in a three block radius moves in and charges you nothing but fallen leaves and acorn cleanup. @the_leo, your houseplants would probably thrive with an oak nearby, they'd get filtered light and free mulch every autumn. Plus you get shade that cuts your AC bill in half and a natural bird feeder that keeps the squirrels entertained. The real issue is having a yard full of grass that won't grow, but that just saves you from mowing.

The real thing nobody talks about is the acorns themselves. A mature oak drops like 10,000 acorns in a good year. I had a friend in Texas who parked his truck under a live oak for one season and ended up with dents all over the roof from falling acorns hitting it. His insurance actually asked if someone jumped on his truck. Plus the squirrels go crazy burying them everywhere and you end up with surprise oak saplings popping up in your flower beds, gutters, and even your neighbor's yard. So it's not just shade and leaves, it's a constant war with tiny hard nuts.
