PSA: Lost $400 on a big mulch delivery because I didn't check the pile first

Honestly, I ordered 10 yards and they dumped a load full of moldy, sour wood chips that killed a row of my client's shrubs. Has anyone else gotten burned by trusting a supplier without seeing the load drop first?

Hang on, is it really that serious though? I've had some funky smelling mulch before and never lost a plant over it.

Man, $400 worth of mulch that actually killed plants? That's brutal... I'd be livid if a supplier dumped sour wood chips on a job like that.

...and the worst part is, you can't even blame the delivery driver most of the time. He's just dropping what they gave him. I've had this exact thing happen, a whole pallet of that ammonia-reeking stuff from a big box store. You gotta check it before you let them tip it, a quick sniff test will save you a headache. If it smells like a barnyard or has that sour, vinegar-ish odor, send it back right then and there. Better to lose a day waiting than to have to replace all those plants and soil later. And for future jobs, I always buy from a local landscape supply yard that ages their own chips, costs a bit more but worth every penny for the peace of mind.
