An old timer in the shop said my torque wrench technique was 'all arm, no feel' and it finally clicked after a snapped bolt on a Ford 302.

Now I always set the wrench, pull slow until it clicks, and never force it, which saved me on a tricky intake manifold job last week - anyone else have a simple tip that fixed a bad habit?

That slow pull also helps you feel for a false click on cheap wrenches.

Yeah, you're totally right about that, @beth276. I've been fooled by that fake click more times than I'd like to admit, usually when I'm using my bargain bin socket set. That little moment of hope before the bolt just spins freely is a special kind of disappointment.

That "special kind of disappointment" is the worst. My cheap wrench's fake click has tricked me into thinking I'm a real mechanic for a solid two seconds before reality hits. It's like the tool is gaslighting you, telling you the job is done when it clearly isn't. I swear sometimes it clicks just to mess with me.
