Broke my snap-on ratchet in a parking lot, now I keep a spare in the door panel
Was doing a battery swap for a lady at the Walmart on 42nd last Tuesday, and my 3/8 ratchet gave out on the third bolt. I picked up a cheap Pittsburgh from the AutoZone across the street just to finish, and honestly it worked fine. Anybody else keep a budget backup tool in their truck for those days when the good stuff quits?

Ditch the cheap stuff. I get the appeal of a $20 backup that gets the job done, but that Pittsburgh is why we end up stripping bolts or rounding off nuts right when we need it most. Snap-on broke on you, sure, but that's a fluke. The cheap one will break on you all the time, and it'll pick the worst moment to do it, like when you're in the middle of something under a car. Resetting a busted bolt or dealing with a slipped fastener costs way more time and money than what you saved on the tool. I keep my old ratchet in the door panel for that exact reason, but it's still a Snap-on, just the older one I trust. Carrying a cheap spare is just setting yourself up for a second trip to the store.
