My torque wrench clicked at 90 ft-lbs on a bolt that should've been 45, and the customer's face told me everything
I was finishing a brake job on a 2016 Civic at my buddy Dale's garage off Route 9 in Poughkeepsie, and I grabbed his old click-type wrench without checking the setting first. It felt tight, so I kept going, and snapped the caliper bracket bolt clean off in the knuckle right as the owner walked in to pick up the car. Took me two hours with an extractor kit and a trip to the parts store for a new bolt, but now I check the setting on every wrench before I even put it on a fastener. Anyone else have a tool that's lied to them like that?
Snapping a caliper bracket bolt clean off in the knuckle is rough, but doing it right as the customer walks in? That timing is almost impressive in the worst way. Two hours with an extractor plus a parts run on a brake job that should've been done... I can feel that pit in your stomach from here. At least you walked away with a new habit instead of just a headache.
