Our team argues over client visits during complex repairs

A regular watched me rebuild a carburetor and kept pointing at parts. Half the crew says customer interest helps build a strong relationship. The other half believes it distracts and can lead to mistakes. I recall a brake job where someone's constant chat caused a misaligned caliper. It becomes a choice between friendliness and focus. How do you manage this in your own shop?

Yeah I was totally on the "let them watch" side for years, thought it built trust. But I had a guy hover during a timing belt job and I almost skipped a tooth. Now I draw a hard line on anything safety critical or really intricate. Quick stuff like an oil change? Sure, pull up a stool. But for the complicated jobs, it's just not worth the risk.

Totally get it, that hovering turns a chill job into a high-pressure exam real quick. Nothing like feeling someone's breath on your neck while you're trying to count camshaft teeth. They always think they're being helpful but really they're just waiting to catch a mistake. It's like having a backseat driver but for wrenches. For the easy stuff who cares, but yeah, when one wrong move means a new engine, my shop turns into a no-fly zone.

Nah hard disagree, low key think letting them watch keeps you more sharp. @joelmoore if a guy almost skipped a tooth that's on you not the customer, having an audience makes you double check everything.

Man, I've been right there. It's all fun and games until someone is peering over your shoulder while you're setting valve lash. My rule is simple: if the job needs a manual open, the customer needs to be in the waiting room. For a brake job or something, fine, ask questions. But if I'm deep in a wiring harness or timing an engine, that extra pressure just makes simple tasks take twice as long. I'm not a performer, I'm a mechanic.
