Rant: I used to chase every rattle with the parts cannon, now I grab a $20 stethoscope first
For years my go to move on a noise complaint was to just start throwing parts at it, and I mean anything, motor mounts, sway bar bushings, whatever was cheap and easy to swap on a Tuesday. Back in 2019 I had a 2011 Ford Escape in my bay at my shop off Aurora Ave in north Seattle and the driver swore the front end was falling apart, so I replaced both lower control arms and the struts, about $640 in parts and a full day gone, and the clunk was still there when he picked it up. I felt like a moron. Turned out the noise was a loose brake caliper bracket bolt, one that I could have spotted in ten minutes with a cheap mechanic's stethoscope and a pry bar. That job cost me money and the guy's trust, and honestly it was the kick in the pants I needed. Now when something rattles I put the front end up on stands, take a rubber mallet and my stethoscope, and I poke at every joint before I even open a parts catalog. Half the time I find the real culprit is a worn bushing or a heat shield, not some big expensive assembly. What is your first move when a customer hands you a noise you cannot pin down right away?
