Unpopular opinion: brake rotors don't need machining every pad swap, and I lost a bet over it
I bet a guy $50 at my buddy's garage in Reno that his rotors were still above spec after 60k miles, and the micrometer proved me right. So how many of you actually measure before cutting, or do you just resurface out of habit?
The micrometer proved me right is the part that gets me, because most guys never even pull one out of the drawer. Here's the thing nobody talks about, its not just thickness you gotta check, its the thickness variation around the rotor. You can be way above the discard spec and still have .002 runout thatll give you a pulsation pedal. So measuring at one spot and calling it good is how people end up resurfacing rotors that didnt need it, or worse, slapping pads on a rotor that should've been tossed.
