Unpopular opinion: my $15 magnetic tray saved my butt on a 2013 Civic timing job in Dallas
I was at my buddy's shop in Dallas and dropped a 10mm bolt down the timing cover, but my $15 magnetic tray caught it before it hit the oil pan. Now I keep two of them on every job, has anyone else had a close call like that?
Man, nope, dropping a bolt into a timing cover is a whole different kind of nightmare. I had a 10mm socket vanish down into a block once and I spent two hours with a magnet wand fishing around like an idiot. Wound up pulling the oil pan anyway, so the socket cost me an entire Saturday. A tray would've been a lot cheaper than that headache. Two on every job sounds like cheap insurance to me. Those little bolts have a mind of their own and they always aim for the worst possible spot.
