A client in Denver told me their entire sales team lost a month of data because of a bad automation rule

I was helping them set up a new lead scoring system in HubSpot last quarter... and the ops lead just said it flat out. They had a rule that moved deals between stages automatically, but it was set to trigger on any status change, not just specific ones. Over 30 days, it silently archived 200+ active deals because someone updated a contact field. They only found out when the sales VP ran a report and saw the pipeline drop. It took their team a full week to manually restore everything from backups. Has anyone else had a simple automation go this wrong?

That's a brutal way to find out your automation is broken. Did they have any kind of alert set up for when deals get archived, or was it just running totally silent? Seems like a basic fail-safe check could have saved them a month of panic.

Tell me about it. I once had a script that was supposed to back up my project files. It ran for six months without a single error, and I felt like a genius. Turns out it was saving everything to a folder that didn't exist anymore. The fail-safe was just me, and I failed pretty hard. You really do need something watching the watcher, or you end up trusting a ghost process. What's the worst silent fail you've seen?

Our Denver client's pipeline report was their only alert system.
