Just hit 3,200 API calls a day from one customer and our billing setup never flinched
Last Tuesday I pulled our usage report and saw one shop account was pushing 3,200 API calls a day, which is about 40 times what our normal mid tier customer does. Six months ago that same spike would have triggered a failed payment, an angry support ticket, and me manually fixing invoices on a Saturday. We moved to metered overage billing back in March and this was the first real stress test. The invoice went out at 6am, the card cleared by noon, and nobody from their team even emailed us. I keep waiting for the catch, but so far the ops side has just been quiet. For anyone running usage based pricing, what is your highest single customer call volume, and did your billing hold up when it spiked?
Wait, is 3,200 calls a day even that much? That works out to a little over 2 calls a minute, which does not sound like a crazy spike for a busy shop account. The real test is not one customer at 3k, it is what happens when ten of them do it at the same time and your meter starts lagging behind. A quiet first run does not prove the system works, it just means nothing broke yet. What happens when a card gets declined on that bigger bill, does it retry or does it just sit there while the calls keep piling up?
