My boss told me to stop building custom reports in Salesforce and just use the standard ones

He said it was a waste of time and the built-in dashboards were good enough for our sales team. I listened and stopped for about two months. Then our quarterly review came up and the head of sales asked for a specific breakdown of deal cycles by region that the standard views couldn't do. I had to scramble for three days to rebuild the custom report I had deleted. Has anyone else had a manager push for less customization only to get burned later?

Sounds like your boss didn't see the real need for those reports... did you show him the data gap that caused the scramble, or just quietly rebuild it? Getting that proof might stop this from happening again next quarter.

But what if the proof just gets ignored? I've shown my boss numbers before and he still called it a waste of time. Sometimes they just don't want to see it.

Yeah, that "proof" part is so key. I once had to rebuild a whole client list from scratch after a system purge, and I made a point to show my manager the three hours of manual work it created. He finally approved the backup process I'd been asking for.
