Showerthought: Tracking every tiny metric in SaaS ops is like trying to count every grain of sand on a beach

Last week I was staring at a dashboard with 47 different metrics for our subscription billing flow, and it hit me that half of them never changed anything we actually did. Three years ago when we started the company, we tracked like 5 things and made decisions just fine. Anyone else realize they've been drowning in vanity metrics and stripped back to just the core 3-5 that actually matter?

I've got 12 metrics on my main dashboard right now and honestly, I don't even look at half of them more than once a month. 47 seems kinda insane unless you're running something like a massive enterprise with teams for each funnel stage. But here's my thing... people get way too dramatic about this. Having more data isn't hurting anything as long as you know which 3-5 actually drive your decisions. Just ignore the rest. It's not like tracking a few extra numbers is costing you real money or ruining your business. Feels like a first world problem honestly.

...and that's exactly why my co-founder banned me from adding new metrics unless I delete two old ones first. I had 47 at one point too, not kidding. Turns out tracking "average time to click the cancel button" and "hover duration on the pricing page" were just my way of feeling busy (and avoiding actual product work). Now I keep it to churn rate, MRR growth, upgrade conversion, and customer support tickets. Everything else is a fun fact I tell myself at parties.
