Update: Spotted a custom offset smoker at a gas station in Boise with a 500-gallon propane tank for the firebox.
The owner said he built it for under $800 and it can hold 12 briskets at once, so now I'm wondering if anyone else has seen homemade rigs that big on a budget?

That's a serious build for the money. Seen a few guys at the station weld up old air tanks or water heaters into smokers, but nothing on that 500-gallon scale. The real trick is finding a tank that cheap without a ton of cleanup work first.

Whoa, that's a monster build! My buddy scored an old 250 gallon fuel oil tank from a farm for basically free. The cleanup was a nightmare though, we had to burn it out for hours before grinding it down. Totally worth it in the end, he's got a beast that smokes for days. Finding the tank is the easy part, putting in the sweat is where the real budget build happens.

Always thought you needed deep pockets for that.

Doubt it's that serious after the cleanup samk77 described. Evahenderson has a point about the work being the real cost, not the tank. Sounds like a lot of hassle for some smoked meat.
