A stuck bottom bracket ate 3 hours of my Saturday and I still feel silly about it
Back when I started wrenched in a shop in 2009, a seized bottom bracket was a 20 minute job with the right cheater bar. So when a customer's old steel tourer came in with a creaking BB last Saturday, I figured I'd knock it out before lunch. Two hours later I was still soaking the drive side in penetrating oil, and I had to go home for a torch because I didn't want to cook the paint with the shop one. It turned out to be galvanic corrosion from a steel frame and an aluminum cup, and no amount of brute force was going to win. I finally cracked it at the 3 hour and 10 minute mark with a heat gun, a strap wrench, and a lot of swearing. Anyone else notice these old bikes fight harder now than they did when the parts were fresh?
