Appreciation post: a customer brought me his dad's 1978 Schwinn and one thing he said stuck with me
He dropped it off at my shop in Boise two weeks ago and asked if I could save the original paint instead of repainting it. When I asked why, he said his dad rode it to work every day for 22 years and he wanted his own son to see those scratch marks. I ended up just doing bearings, cables, and a good cleaning, and he teared up a little when he picked it up. Do you folks ever talk customers out of a full restore when the wear is the whole point?
I'm gonna be that guy and say I kinda disagree... those scratches are cool but they still need protection or they'll just turn into rust and then there's no bike left to pass down. You can keep the wear and still put a clear coat or wax over it so the kid actually gets to see it in 30 years. Sounds like you did right by him though, that's the main thing.
